Exmouth and East

Thanks to The Den Honiton for hosting and Open Door Exmouth, The Den, Parental Minds and Space for attending.

We started by welcoming everyone and asking people to talk a bit about what their organisations had been doing and for new groups to explain their aims and work.

  • Parental Minds is a support charity based in Honiton that supports 700 families in East Devon, they support the families of young people with mental health needs and SEND.

  • They are mostly volunteers, many of whom have lived experience and coming through the programs they offer.

  • They run a session every week in Honiton, are active in schools, they offer training for parents as well. They are currently only working in East Devon

  • The Den haver now been open since June, they have had numerous challenges already and there have been several changes in the local area that have impacted on their work.

  • Honiton ass a town is keen to set up a Youth Council

  • They have been in school to promote what they do to new young people.

  • Open Door Exmouth have continued to run their youth cafe, with lots of food based work over the summer. They have had lots of young people attending, currently they offer 2 after school sessions per week.

  • We talked about behaviour challenges, they reported that having a structure every session enabled young people to pick something to do and engage, leaving space for those who just need a quiet space to be able to find it and encouraged more young people to be active participants.

It was resolved that-

  • Parental Minds would put together a price for training parents from any local group that wanted it, possibly outside Honiton to broaden the appeal, this would be part funded by the network fund.

Next meeting will be in March 2025, we will let you know the date as soon as possible and it will be online this time.
